Electric Bodies, 2020

cast aluminum & aluminum plate

Dust Temple, Currumbin Waters, QLD, Australia

Concept

The title, Electric Bodies, stems from the fact that all living matter has an electric charge. These electric charges can be, positive, negative or neutral.  The transference of electrons creates an electric current which in turn creates an electromagnetic field. The piece is about the exchange of invisible electrical energy and the transmutation of matter. The two pieces are colliding and the top, the ‘miscast’ feels as if it is evaporating into the ethers. The base is the same material with a mirror finish. I wanted the viewer to be able to imagine the form coming from and returning to the aluminum puddle at the base as well as into the air.

This sculpture was the first work where I explore the inverse of, “We are bound by our bodies to the earth” - E. Faye. I am now exploring the affects of immaterial matter, naked to the eye. My  process is evolving into a conversation about elemental transformation paired with material transformation.

Material

The transformation of material is the most important aspect of this piece. Aluminum is derived from clay and this process is quite arduous. The fact that the original mold was made from earthen clay and became aluminum speaks to the process of material, and elemental transformation.
